The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home, a space where cooking, gathering, and daily conversations happen. Remodeling this essential room can elevate your home’s comfort, functionality, and value. But where do you start? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials of kitchen remodeling—from planning and budgeting to design trends and maximizing space. Whether you’re looking for a full kitchen transformation or a quick refresh, these insights can help you achieve a space you’ll love.
1. Plan Your Kitchen Remodel
Define Your Goals
Before diving into materials and designs, set clear goals for your kitchen remodel:
Are you looking to increase storage or counter space?
Do you want to improve the layout for better traffic flow?
Is there a particular style you’re drawn to?
Setting specific goals ensures that every element in your kitchen contributes to its function and aesthetic.
Set a Realistic Budget
Kitchen remodels can vary significantly in cost, depending on size, materials, and finishes. To avoid overspending:
Research average costs for kitchens similar to yours.
Factor in 10-20% of your budget for unexpected expenses.
Prioritize what’s most important to you—whether that’s quality appliances, custom cabinetry, or high-end countertops.
2. Choosing the Right Kitchen Layout
The layout of your kitchen directly impacts its usability. Here are some popular layouts and their benefits:
L-Shape
The L-shaped kitchen is popular for open-plan homes, as it allows a natural flow between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This layout works well for smaller kitchens or for those who want to add an island.
U-Shape
Ideal for larger kitchens, the U-shaped layout provides plenty of counter space and storage. It’s perfect for those who love to cook and entertain, as it allows more than one cook in the kitchen at once.
Galley
The galley kitchen, with two parallel countertops, is highly functional for small spaces. It allows easy movement and ensures that everything is within reach.
Island Kitchen
For those with ample space, an island can be a game-changer. Not only does it add countertop space, but it also serves as an additional area for seating, storage, and even built-in appliances.
3. Must-Have Kitchen Features
A modern kitchen remodel involves more than new paint and cabinetry. Here are some trending features that can improve both function and design:
Smart Appliances
From refrigerators with touchscreens to voice-activated ovens, smart appliances can streamline meal prep and even save energy. Consider investing in a few key pieces that align with your cooking habits and lifestyle.
Quartz Countertops
Quartz is a durable, low-maintenance material that has become a favorite for modern kitchens. Unlike granite, quartz is non-porous, making it stain-resistant and easy to clean.
Custom Cabinetry and Pull-Out Storage
Custom cabinetry can help you maximize every inch of your kitchen. Consider options like pull-out drawers, hidden spice racks, and under-cabinet lighting to keep your kitchen organized and stylish.
Energy-Efficient Lighting
Incorporate LED lighting for an eco-friendly choice that’s also versatile in design. Under-cabinet lighting and pendant lights can enhance your kitchen’s ambiance while illuminating workspaces effectively.
4. Popular Kitchen Design Trends
Staying on-trend can give your kitchen a modern look, but focus on timeless elements for lasting appeal. Here are some popular kitchen design trends for this year:
Two-Tone Cabinets
Combining two cabinet colors, like navy blue lower cabinets with white upper cabinets, adds dimension and personality. This trend is ideal for those looking to add color without overpowering the space.
Open Shelving
Open shelving is a popular choice for displaying stylish dishes and plants while keeping things accessible. It works particularly well in small kitchens, making the room feel larger and more open.
Minimalist Hardware
Slim, matte-finished handles and knobs have become a favorite in contemporary kitchens. Matte black, brushed brass, and stainless steel finishes are especially trendy and pair well with most cabinet colors.
Backsplash Accent Walls
A unique backsplash, whether it’s subway tile or a bold pattern, can serve as the focal point of your kitchen. Many homeowners are choosing floor-to-ceiling backsplashes for added impact and a cohesive look.
5. Eco-Friendly Choices for a Sustainable Kitchen
If sustainability is a priority, there are numerous ways to make your kitchen more eco-friendly:
Recycled or Sustainable Materials: Opt for cabinetry and flooring made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials.
Energy-Efficient Appliances: Look for the Energy Star rating on appliances, which ensures they use less energy than standard models.
Water-Saving Faucets: Eco-friendly faucets can reduce water waste without sacrificing performance, ideal for both cooking and cleaning.
6. Final Tips for a Successful Kitchen Remodel
Work with Professionals: Hiring a professional contractor, designer, or architect can help you make the most of your space and avoid costly mistakes.
Optimize Storage: Kitchen storage is essential—plan for items like pull-out shelves, lazy Susans, and vertical dividers to keep everything organized.
Focus on Lighting: A well-lit kitchen is essential for both functionality and aesthetics. Mix natural, ambient, and task lighting for a balanced look.
Conclusion
A kitchen remodel is a fantastic way to increase your home’s value and functionality while creating a space that you and your family will love. By planning carefully, setting a budget, and incorporating both functional and stylish features, you can create a kitchen that meets your needs and reflects your personality.
Ready to start your kitchen remodel? Remember, it’s not just about following trends—it’s about creating a kitchen you’ll enjoy for years to come. Happy remodeling!

TESTIMONIALS
See what some of our clients are saying about our service and experience.
-Dennis Hennessy
“My wife and I have completed two projects with Elements Home Design Center. I like to do some work on my own. The first project involved custom cabinets for a bedroom. I submitted a sketch to Suzie. She took the sketch and made final design for the cabinet maker. Details and the completed cabinets exceeded my expectations.
The second project was a remodel of a guest bathroom. My wife and I had some ideas in mind. Suzie took the ideas, finalized working drawings, and discussed all elements and costs with the contractors involved. The completed project met deadlines and budget. The quality of the work receives compliments from all guests who use it.”
-Pat & Richard
“How can we truly express our appreciation for your contributions and gentle suggestions regarding our home. We particularly want you to know what a marvelous design you created for our fireplace. Thank you for a great work of art! Best wishes.”
-Terese Tewalt
“Suzy does a fantastic job. She coordinated everything for me when it came to the contractor and sub contractor . She was always on it . Always following up to make sure everything ran smoothly . She also had great design ideas for every thing that I wanted done from the kitchen, to the bathrooms and the flooring throughout . And if she thought my ideas didn’t go with the flow of the house she was honest and explained why . She also is easy to work with and has a terrific send of humor and always has a smile to share . She is a professional who brings everything together and went far beyond my expectations .”

OUR DESIGN EXPERTS
SUZIE SHORE COX
“All clients that are planning on remodeling their home should see an expert for a grand plan before any demolitions or temporary improvements. A plan should include the “Priority #1″ to the “do later” adjacent spaces, so that money will not be wasted on needless materials”.
Interior and Furniture Designer, Suzie Shore-Cox works with homeowners to improve the function, mood and harmony of their living spaces. She often says. “Interior Design has 3 parts; art, phycology and science.” Suzie completed the Interior Design Certification Program at Cuesta College in 2012. That same year she and her husband, Grover opened Elements Home Design Center in Arroyo Grande, California.
Previous to owning Elements Suzie, her Husband Grover and Daughter Shanon owned Beach House Unfinished Furniture and Design with 2 locations in San Luis Obispo and Grover Beach, California.
They loved the quality wood furniture business; the creativity of finishing furniture, designing custom furniture and the many customers that they served from 2001 to 2009.
The design scope evolved from designing custom wood furniture to a complete interior design business.
Through the years Suzie and Shanon have honed their education and experience to professional experts with new build and remodel construction. They work with clients and contractors to develop a comprehensive design plan complete with layout drawings, material selection, color selection, scope of work and costs. They emphasize the importance of “Having a Plan” and some materials on site before the demolition of the old. Having then plan will save contractors and clients time, money and frustration.
Once all of the pieces of the design plan are confirmed ordering materials and construction begins. Clients have the option of hiring Suzie as a “Design Manager” on the job site. She will keep a keen eye the construction to be sure the final product looks like the design plans.
SHANON HINTZ – Design Assistant
Shanon has an eye for good design as well as an education. Her calm demeanor makes her a pleasure to work with. She can create and stay focused in a busy design/build enviroment, not easy to do for most.
Shanon attended Brooks Institute of Design in Long Beach, California. Her focus was on set design for the movie and TV studios. She is a certified Faux and furniture finisher from FauxMasters in San Diego. Shanon has been painting, staining and faux finishing custom furniture for Elements and Beach House for the past 17 years. Shanon is our expert on custom window coverings that we offer at Elements. Customers are always extremely happy with her work! Shanon has two beautiful children, a daughter and a son. All are creatively talented! Shanon is also Suzie’s daughter, and her favorite human.
